The question of whether a spa needs to have a pool or water experience is an interesting one and one I am often asked. While there is no strict requirement for a spa to have a pool or water feature, incorporating water into a spa experience can offer numerous benefits. The word SPA originated from the Latin phrase “Sanitas Per Aquam,” meaning “health through water.” This highlights the historical association between water and wellness. In my view, the use of water can have therapeutic effects on the body and mind, making it a valuable addition to any spa regardless of size.
Having a pool or water experience in a spa can provide a variety of benefits. Water-based activities such as swimming or aquatic exercises offer a low-impact form of exercise, aiding in physical fitness and overall well-being. Additionally, being in or near water can promote relaxation, relieve stress, and enhance a sense of calm. Water-based therapies, like hydrotherapy and floatation therapy, can also provide unique health benefits.
When considering a spa pool or water experience, it’s important to note that the body of water doesn’t necessarily have to be a large pool. It could be an outdoor pool, a natural pool within the spa’s grounds, or even a nearby resource like a river or lake. The size and location can vary based on the spa’s vision and available space. An excellent example of incorporating water into a spa experience can be seen at Elcot Park. They have a fantastic outdoor pool operating at a comfortable temperature and an indoor vitality pool with thermal rooms, among other amenities. This combination of water experiences has been highly praised by hotel guests and leisure members alike, adding value and enjoyment to their overall spa experience.

As a keen swimmer myself, I can attest to the benefits of swimming in both pools and open water. Swimming provides a non-impact way of keeping fit and staying healthy, and it offers a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation. My favourite local spot is the Thames Lido, which has undergone a fantastic restoration project, reviving a Victorian baths building into a modern spa with an outdoor pool, thermal rooms, treatment rooms, and a restaurant. It’s truly a gem worth exploring.
